Why the Downforce solution works

Why the Downforce solution works

Unlike other companies measuring and testing soils, Downforce Technologies uses historical soil sampling data and more than 20 data layers relating to the factors and processes affecting soils to assess the levels of soil organic carbon (SOC) over eight years in making our assessment.

In addition, we extract information from the Sentinel satellite missions on soil moisture and vegetative cover to assess the health of ground vegetation and water retention.

All this information is updated every 10 days across the area of interest, to produce a long-term series of SOC data for each 10m x 10m section of land. By building our analysis around the key features affecting soils health including soil type, parent material, texture, elevation, topography, soil pH, the weather, and organic carbon levels in similar soils we can also assimilate fresh samples with existing data based on the conditions under which samples were taken.

Because we reference so many data points, sampling biases and measurement errors are evened out both at a field level and over time.

We can also set a baseline for any given piece of land and are able to provide trend data for farmers to show which interventions are sequestering more carbon and which are working less effectively.

And because our assessments are based on internationally validated samples and ongoing remote sensing, we can gather data at times and in places where conventional soil core testing is not possible, such as in the centre of fields ready to be harvested or after heavy rains. We are not limited to drawing generalisations from samples taken before planting, after harvest or when the ground is dry.

The Downforce Technologies solution is based on decades of research by thousands of scientists and draws on internationally recognised soil surveys and ground truthing and global earth observation data that have been calibrated and validated.

It recognises the complexity and variability of soil systems and empowers farmers to develop sustainable ways to manage their land and sequester carbon as the world works towards a Net-Zero future.
